This Valentine’s Day, fall in love with Planet Earth!
The word biophilia describes humankind’s innate biological connection with nature.
According to 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design: Improving Health & Well-Being in the Built Environment:
“Biophilia helps explain why crackling fires and crashing waves captivate us; why a garden view can enhance our creativity; why shadows and heights instill fascination and fear; and why animal companionship and strolling through a park have restorative, healing effects.”
It has since become a style of design in home and office décor used for its positive impact on those living in the environment. Examples include:
- Improved health
- Increased mood and feeling of well-being
- Improved productivity
- Reduced stress levels
- Mental restoration & reduced fatigue
There are just a few core principles of biophilic design:

We can achieve this by choosing environmentally friendly and sustainable décor. So we’ve put together a few tips on some of the best ways to do just that as you give your space a biophilic design:
Buy Fewer, But Higher Quality
The reason behind this is simple: You buy one thing that will last a very long time, rather than buying many things which don’t last and, therefore, need replacing soon.
Upcycle
Before considering replacing your furniture, think about what you can do to give it another lease on life. A prime example would be to reupholster couches and chairs, and a prime benefit is that you still get a completely fresh look.
Thrift it
If your piece is too far gone to be upcycled, rather than buying a brand new replacement, find previously loved items at flea markets and second-hand shops. It’s a world of possibility with all the hidden gems out there!
Eco-Friendly Materials
Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This contributes to sustainability by conserving resources like water and energy, and preventing pollution (air, water and land).
Some of our favourite ways to do this are:
- Decorate the indoors with potted plants succulents
- Use natural fibres and recycled materials in place of artificial ones
- Décor: rocks, pebbles, wood, reclaimed metals
- Furniture: wooden tables and chairs
- Window treatments: bamboo or wooden Venetian blinds, bamboo roller blinds, wooden shutters

So let’s ditch the romantic red this month and opt to go green instead!
